Everything You Need to Know About Tinted Windows

Whether you are in the market for a new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram with tinted windows, or you are just curious about tinted windows and how they work, we breakdown the dos and don’ts in this article.

To help explain all things tinted windows, we created a little Q&A session for you.

What are tinted windows?

A tinted window is a regular window with an added tint film that allows a percentage of light—known as Visible Light Transmission (VLT)—to pass through it. Tinted windows may be installed as a new vehicle add-on or aftermarket upgrade.

Why do people want tinted windows?

A plethora of reasons! Some people just like how tinted windows look on their Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram vehicle. Others need tinted windows for medical reasons. Still others are just looking for some relief from the brightness of the sun.

Are there laws about tinted windows?

Yes! Each state has different legal VLT allowable limits for passenger vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles. In Tennessee, you must allow for more than 70% of light for any tint installed on a windshield—and metallic or mirrored window tint is not approved for use.

  • Passenger Vehicles: Front seat, back seat, and rear windows are allowed up to a 35% tint darkness. The front windshield must be a non-reflective tint.

  • Multi-Purpose Vehicles: The front windshield must allow more than 70% of light in. The front seat and rear window are allowed up to 35% tint darkness, whereas the back seat windows must allow more than 35% of light in.

How do I keep tinted windows clean?

Regularly cleaning the windows minimizes the chances of dirt buildup and decreased visibility. The best products to use are those that are mild or free of harsh chemicals, like a window film application solution. Keep harsh chemicals away from your tinted windows to protect the tint film from peeling or weathering.

Will the heat from the sun harm my tinted windows?

In extreme cases, the UV rays from the sun could damage your tinted windows. Although the tint provides shade for you and the interior of your vehicle, sunlight does still shine through. To keep your tinted windows looking like new, always park the vehicle in the shade and/or use dashboard covers.

How do I protect tinted windows from scratches?

Most window tint film is durable and scratch-resistant, but even stones and seat belts can cause minor damage that may expand over time. Our biggest advice to you: Be careful when you are loading or unloading your car and remind young kids not to hit or throw hard or sharp objects around your vehicle.
