How to Find Success in Your Used Car Search

From what you can afford, to a focused and purposeful test drive, the right used car is just a little due diligence away.
The automobile market is hot right now. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain issues are impacting auto production, delivery, and inventory. In fact, now is a good time to find a used ride. Here are 5 tips to help you find success in your used car search:

  1. Know your budget before beginning your search. Whether you have cash to pay in full or need to finance, knowing how much money you have—or will need to spend in monthly payments—will help you make a successful buying decision.
  2. Narrow down your vehicle-type wish list. If you have a growing family, a SUV or minivan might be the best option. If you are single or just starting out on your own, a compact car or small truck might be the best fit. If you’re a hockey parent, novice hunter, or farmer, your trunk storage needs likely differ. Get the picture? It is extremely important to consider your wants and needs in your used car search—lifestyle matters to the car-buying process.
  3. Examine the car visually and always go for a test drive. Your first impression matters! Trust your gut and your instincts. Without even getting in the vehicle, look for faded paint, rust, dents, balding tires, or other issues. If all meets your inspection standards, look inside. Turn the car on and check the lights, brakes, seatbelts, A/C system, radio, etc., and ensure warning errors like a check engine light do not come on. Last, it’s time for that test drive. The price may be right, but does it feel right to sit in the driver’s seat, look in the review mirror, check the blind spot, or parallel park?
  4. Ask for a vehicle history report. This report is derived from a car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) and will let you know if it has ever been in an accident, has a clean title, or other issues. It’s a little peace of mind before you sign the dotted line.
  5. Negotiate like a pro. Unlike new cars, used cars often come with a little wiggle room in the price. If you like to haggle, feel free to give it a go. Know the value of what you are asking for and be respectful enough not to give a lowball offer. But beware, when inventory is low, it will be hard to get much of a deal beyond the sticker tag.
